Vitalik Buterin sells another $1.6Million in meme coins promised for charity

Vitalik Buterin, the co-creator of Ethereum, has donated $884,000 to charity in the last ten days as meme coiners continue to deposit tokens in his wallet. He has also converted another $1.6 million in meme coins into Ether ETH $2,533.37, which he previously vowed to distribute to charities.

The transaction includes $982,800 in Moo Deng (MOOD ENG), $231,000 in Monsterra (MSTR), and $183,000 in ETHEREUM IS GOOD (EBULL), according to a post on Oct. 13 by blockchain analytics firm Spot On Chain. Buterin also sold shares of Popcat (POPCAT), Fwog (FWOG), and Vitalek Buteren (VITALIK).

Over the last nine days, he has changed $2.78 million in memecoins into Ether and contributed $884,000 to charities, Spot On Chain reported on October 13.

Buterin complimented meme coin issuers for giving him coins to donate but advised them to donate directly instead. On October 7, Buterin said in an X post that he would donate all 10 billion meme coin tokens he had received to an organisation developing anti-airborne disease technology.

On August 15, Buterin donated all the animal-themed memecoins he had received in the previous 12 months to Effective Altruism Funds’ Animal Welfare Fund.

Buterin’s donations should also increase.

His $700 million crypto portfolio still includes $2.4 million in MOODENG tokens, $144,000 in Neiro (NEIRO), $117,000 in MSTR, and $80,000 in Degen (DEGEN), according to Spot On Chain statistics. Buterin has long believed that memecoins might benefit society by sponsoring vital public initiatives or even enabling people in low-income nations to earn a living.

Meanwhile, Buterin has lambasted celebrity-themed memecoins that are simply intended to benefit the celebrity and early investors. Economists Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok recently proposed Buterin as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2024.

“Vitalik built a platform, created a currency, and, you could say, refuted Mises’ regression theorem in the process, obviously following in Satoshi’s footsteps, but my goodness, what does someone have to do to get a Nobel Prize?” Cowen said during an episode of the duo’s Marginal Revolution podcast on October 8. Tabarrok agreed, adding: “Not only that, but Vitalik has continued to contribute to the mechanism design of Ethereum by transitioning to proof-of-stake.”
