The Solana L2 Sonic native token will be launched on January 7th

Sonic, the Solana Virtual Machine chain for Solana-based games and applications, will launch its native token SONIC on January 7. On December 31, the Sonic team announced that the layer-2 chain’s token creation event on Solana (sol 0.54%) will give 57% of the token supply to the community. The distribution will consist of SONIC reserved for the ecosystem, initial claims, and Sonic HyperGrid awards.

The TGE news comes just a few days after the Solana L2 gaming platform announced its intention to airdrop native tokens to TikTok users. SONIC will power the game-focused blockchain and its multi-Solana Virtual Machine ecosystem.

Sonic will have a total of 2.4 billion tokens, with 15% expected to go into circulation during the TGE. According to the L2 project, the snapshot for the first SONIC claim was finished on December 31, 2024. This allows for an airdrop of 7% of the total supply for the initial claim, with the community able to use the eligibility checker on January 3.

The SONIC token launch is part of the Solana project’s phase 1 roadmap. Phase 2 consists of the mainnet alpha, Sonic X Android and iOS app compatibility, and token bridge integration. The project will also aim for HyperGrid optimistic rollups and the Sonic Grid v2 release in 2025. The token’s listing on centralized exchanges and Solana-based decentralized exchanges will be announced via the team’s social media channels.
